Brand Snapshot

new koala mattress

Koala is an Australian company established in 2015 in Sydney.

They made their debut on the Australian market with the Koala Mattress. Since then, they’ve expanded their range of products, offering high-quality Koala beds and furniture, as well as bed linen and bedding products.

In addition to the best-selling Koala bed, the company has two more excellent options in the mattress department:

  • The Koala Calm As Mattress, an all-foam bed providing cool and comfy sleep.
  • The New Koala Soul Mate Mattress, guaranteed to improve the quality and quantity of your sleep.

Koala is a socially responsible company to boot. As a member of WWF Australia it helps restore wild forests and save koalas. It is also a member of 1% for the planet, giving out 1% of their yearly gross profits to charities oriented toward preserving the environment.

Material & Construction

This 25-cm high mattress is made of CertiPUR-US, eco-friendly materials that will not only provide you with the best sleep but will also keep you cool and supported through the night.

The Koala Mattress has three separate layers

  • 7cm of TENCEL Lyocell fibre, a super-absorbent fabric to ensure cool and dry nights.
  • A double-sided Kloudcell comfort layer, allowing you to customise the firmness level to your needs.
  • Three high-density support zones for optimal pressure relief on the hips, shoulder, and back. This layer is paired with an anti-slip bottom to make sure your mattress stays in place.

The Koala Mattress features a simple yet effective construction. However, those who want a mattress with all the bells and whistles, should take a look at the Noa Luxe Mattress.

Koala Mattress Firmness

As mentioned above, the Koala mattress comes with a flippable comfort layer for tailored support and firmness.

The softer side is medium-firm, ranking between 6 and 7 on the firmness scale (10 being firmest).

The firmer side is 7.5 on the 1-10 scale, so it’s better suited to heavier users and stomach sleepers.

This level of customisation is rarely found on the market, making the Koala mattress all the more special and unique.

Comfort & Support

The Koala mattress ensures comfort for people of all sizes, shapes, and sleeping styles.

The base comfort layer provides outstanding pressure relief, especially around the hips and lumbar area, making the Koala Mattress an excellent choice for back sleepers and people struggling with joint issues.

The firmness-adaptability, as well as the 3 zone support feature makes it suitable for stomach sleepers and side sleepers as well.

That said, the Koala mattress is an all foam-bed that lacks the bounce of a latex or hybrid bed. If you are a combo sleeper who likes to change positions throughout the night, the Macoda mattress might be a better option.

Temperature Regulation

Usually pocket springs or hybrid mattresses allow for better temperature regulation than all-foam beds.

However, Koala claims that all their mattresses come with cooling technology to prevent heat retention and release moisture.

The Koala achieves this thanks to the top TENCEL layer—a super breathable material cooler than linen and more absorbent than cotton.

Motion Transfer

Foam mattresses are known for isolating motion, and the Koala Mattress is no exception.

Thanks to the three foam layers, you will not feel any movement in the bed even if your partner tosses and turns all night.

Innerspring mattresses, though, are more responsive and bouncier than all-foam beds, so a hybrid or latex mattress could be a better choice for intimate activities.

Edge Support

They might excel at motion isolation, but foam beds rarely have good edge support of a hybrid, like the Eva Mattress.

However, the dense foam, as well as the higher firmness level of the comfort layer, makes the Koala Mattress more sustainable, so less prone to sagging and sinking, especially around the edges.

Maintenance & Durability

Like all-foam mattresses, the Koala Mattress should be rotated (at 180 degrees) every six months.

Flipping the mattress, though, is a definite no-no due to the design and foam construction.

The TENCEL cover is made out of 65% Polyester, making it quite easy to maintain. These materials dry really fast, so doing some spot cleaning with a water-based solution should do the trick in no time.

Trial Period and Warranty

Koala offers the standard 120-trial period, during which you can see if the mattress is right for you. The company also recommends trying the bed for a minimum of 14-nights to get accustomed to it.

The Koala mattress warranty covers damages for 10 years, per the industry standard. Even though other beds on the market come with a 15-year warranty or longer, this is still a generous guarantee period considering all-foam beds are more prone to sagging.

Delivery & Returns

The Koala Mattress could arrive at your doorstep in just four hours after placing the order, giving a whole new meaning to the term “fast delivery”.

If for any reason, you are unsatisfied with the mattress, you could return the product, but bear in mind that Koala mattress returns come with a fee if you reside in certain areas.

Koala has signed a partnership agreement with Soft Landing, a company dedicated to recycling mattresses, so for a small fee (free for Melbourne), you could also get rid of your old mattress.

Returned Koala mattresses are donated to one of the 68 shelters around Australia.

Setting up the bed is easy, too, although you might want to watch a video or two on how to flip the comfort layer properly. After that, wait for about a day for the mattress to decompress, and you’re good to go.

Koala Mattress Accessories

Koala may have started in 2015, but they offer a wide variety of products to make your home a cozier and more beautiful place.

These include:
